Top 5 Wednesday: Favorite First Sentences

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes and created by Lainey @ Ginger Reads Lainey. You can check out the group’s Goodreads page to join and check out the topics of the month.

This Week’s Topic: Favorite first sentences

Once again, this week’s topic is pretty self-explanatory. I don’t have any favorite first sentences, but I found some that I thought were interesting.

Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld

The early summer sky was the color of cat vomit.

There is no book other than this one that has the two words “cat vomit” in its first sentence. Heck, I haven’t come across a lot of books that mention cat vomit at all, let alone use it to describe the sky color.

Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson

No, no. I insist you stop right now.

Jenny Lawson is the only author that would ask her readers to stop reading her book.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children, #1) by Ranson Riggs

I had come to accept that my life would be ordinary when extraordinary things began to happen.

This statement is written in true Ransom Riggs fashion. That’s all I have to say about this.

The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles, #1) by Mary E. Pearson

Today was the day a thousand dreams would die and a single dream would be born.

I just really love this book.

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan

Chapter 1: I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher

I know this isn’t technically the first sentence of the story, but Rick Riordan is the king of naming chapters. Who wouldn’t be interested in reading about how this kid accidentally vaporize his pre-algebra teacher?

Until next time….

Wow, I’m now curious as to what cat vomit looks like, and why that was used to describe the sky…

I’ve only read The Lightning Thief so far, and I really enjoyed it. I own the whole series, I just need to hurry up and read the rest! 😀 Great Top 5! I never even thought to write down or mark the great first sentences in the books I’ve read, so this week’s topic was a little hard. I had to switch it up a bit 🙂 My T5W! 😀
