This Week’s Topic: inaccurate book covers

These are the covers where they either:

  1. completely irrelevant to the story
  2. the model on the front is nothing like the character described in the story
  3. the cover is cheesy but the story is not
  4. etc.

The original cover for Throne of Glass was actually more accurate than the current cover. It is said in the story that Celaena has golden hair, but clearly in this cover it’s white/silver. I’m not mad at the cover. I think the cover looks amazing, and golden hair would probably ruin the whole color scheme that’s happening.

Illuminae Ray V6FrontOnlyA2A_V3.inddIlluminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

It’s not that this book cover is inaccurate, but I don’t think it captures what the story is actually about. Just looking at the cover, it just looks like red smoke and flames. Nothing much on the cover reveals that most of the story takes place in space. The cover still looks pretty cool, though.

Like Illuminae, I don’t think this cover of Jackaby really captures what the story is about. Sure, there are the two main characters on the cover, but it doesn’t show much about those characters other than the fact that one’s a boy and one’s a girl. One might mistaken that the characters on the front are going to fall in love, which is not the case. Jackaby and Abigail’s relationship is completely platonic.

There is nothing on the cover that gives me any hint about what I’m about to read other than the fact that there will be a dagger involved. I might deduce further that the story is about a fighter or assassin, but that’s about it. When this book first came out, I found that the cover was pretty plain. There’s nothing wrong with a plain cover, but I just wished there was more on it to give the book more character.

Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I’ll be the first to admit it. These covers are pretty cheesy. However, the story isn’t. I keep trying to convince my friends to read the series, but they won’t because of the covers. If you’re debating on reading this series and won’t because of the covers, JUST READ IT. THIS SERIES IS AMAZING AND OH MY GOODNESS DAEMON AND KATY ARE SO CUTE TOGETHER!

I agree with pretty much all of these! While the original cover for Throne of Glass actually suits the book better I agree that the new one is waaaaaay better. I have seen the Lux series around but you’re right I avoid it because of the cheesy covers, I might have to check them out now since you say the covers are awful but the story is great! Great list Jessica! 🙂

You should read the Lux series! It’s one of my favorite YA series.

I’ve been avoiding The Selection series because of the covers. I had not really paid attention to the Throne of Glass ones, but now I see why it’s slightly off. Nice post!

Surprisingly, The Selection series is less girly than it seems on the cover. You should give it a try!
I actually never noticed the change of hair color on the new Throne of Glass cover until a friend pointed it out because I was still marveling at the fierce artwork.

You know.. I kind of felt that the Lux series were bleh… because of the covers.. Yesterday, I thought of trying it and OH MY GOD!!!! They are the best!! I kept thinking.. Where were you my whole life, Daemon?
I would’ve missed this amazing series if not for you. Thank you so much!!

AHHH A FELLOW LUX FAN! I’m super happy your reading it. Glad you like it! 😀 I found that a lot of people won’t read it because of the covers, but even though they’re cheesy, I wouldn’t change them for the world.

Good choices! I agree: I liked the original Throne of Glass cover much better. I’m not a big fan of the current covers: they look kind of cheesy to me.
The Lux series has always tempted me, but I agree: the covers are mediocre at best. Actually, all your covers are perfect examples of what NOT do to with your book cover.
A lot of people agree about The Young Elites covers, but it’s funny that no one mentioned them until now! 😉

Well you know what they say: don’t judge a book by its cover! 😊
