Halloween is approaching and I still don’t know what I’m going to dress up as. Chances are I’m going to procrastinate on making my costume to the very last minute, like I do every year.
I was tagged by the lovely Heather over at The Sassy Book Geek! Don’t forget to check out her blog and give her some love! ❤ (This tag was originally created by Clever Fox!)
Although I love the holiday of Halloween, I am a big chicken. I don’t like scary things. I don’t like scary movies, and I’m terrified of haunted houses. You can’t get me within a mile of a haunted house, no matter how mild the scares are.
I also don’t read a lot of scary books either. I’ve got a fairly vivid and irrational imagination, and I don’t need scary stories to help me conjure up monsters in my head. That being said, a lot of my book choices for this tag won’t actually be all that scary.
1. What goes bump into the night? Name a book that has legitimately scared you while reading it.
Through the Woods by Emily Carroll
I am absolutely scared of this graphic novel. Not only are the stories creepy, but the illustrations are absolutely terrifying. I actually did not finish all five stories in this book. I only read three before quitting it and shelving it as a DNF. I’m too terrified of this book and I don’t think I’m going to pick it up again any time soon.
2. Jack O’ Lanterns and Classic Costumes – A book you always reach for during Halloween time
anything on my TBR list
Like I’ve said before, I don’t like anything remotely scary, which includes books. During Halloween, I try to catch up on some of the books on my TBR.
3. Black Cats and Magic Mirrors – A book you love that is laced with superstition and/or magic
The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi
The culture in this story is all about horoscopes. If you have a bad horoscope, you will bring bad fortune. The main character, Maya, is cursed with a really bad horoscope, and she is shunned because of that. There is magic elements, slight superstition, and a whole lot of beautiful writing in this book.
4. Witch’s Brew – Favorite witch character in any book/series.
Manon Blackbeak
I realized while in search for my favorite witch character that I don’t read a lot of books with witches in them despite reading a lot of YA fantasy novels. I could’ve gone the easy route and chose a female character from Harry Potter, but I thought that was too obvious. Then again, who’s surprised that I chose a character from the Throne of Glass series? Absolutely no one. Still, Manon, despite her struggles, is a badass female character. She also has a wyvern, which adds brownie points in my eyes.
5. Ghouls and Ghosts – A book that still haunts you to this day (good or bad)
In a good way…
This Star Won’t Go Out by Esther Earl
I came across this book through the Vlogbrothers community. It’s a collection of journal entries, letters, sketches, etc. of Esther Earl, who was very active Nerdfighter before she passed away in 2010. John Green recommended the book so I put it on my wishlist during Christmas time and read it around New Years. Still to this day I think about the book. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It made me feel all the feelings, and I would highly recommend it, even if you’re not part of the Nerdfighteria yet.
In a bad way…
I can’t think of any book at the top of my head that was SO BAD that I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Most of the time, if I don’t like a book, I would try and recommend it to someone that I think would enjoy it. I haven’t come across a book that I can’t think of a single person to recommend it to. Yet.
6. Haunted Graveyard – You’re all alone in a haunted graveyard and you get ONE book to give you comfort. Which is it?
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
If I was in a dang haunted graveyard, I would like a map of set of instructions on how to get out of it. If exiting is not an option, then I would like any of the books from Harry Potter to comfort me. I mean, who doesn’t like Harry Potter?
7. The Undead – Favorite supernatural creature to read about (ex. vampires, zombies, werewolves, etc.)
faeries
I read a lot of books with faeries in them. I don’t know why. I just do.
8. In the dead of night – Pick a book with a black cover
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Not only is the cover black, so are the pages! Well… only the edges are black… but it still looks cool!
I tag…
everyone who wants to get into the spooky spirit!

I hate scary things too. Especially horror movies. I am NEVER going to watch one. The pictures in Miss Peregine’s School for Peculiar Children gave me nightmare before I finished a chapter.

Hahaha same here! Although Miss Peregrine’s isn’t actually a scary story, the pictures still creeped me out so much that I couldn’t sleep that well 😂
