These books are a LIE

I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to post this, but I think it needs to be said. At first it seemed harmless, but the more I looked into them, the more I felt like everyone needed to know. Before I get into the details of everything, I have one thing to say….

April Fool’s!

I’m not super big on pranks, but I couldn’t resist doing a little click-bait moment to get into the spirit of things. I’m not going to be talking smack about any books today. This post is actually about books covers could FOOL you. Eh? See what I did there? Because, today is the day people fool- sorry, I’ll stop (please don’t hate me). Basically, I compiled some books where the covers don’t match their stories.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I know this is a pretty popular YA book, but I thought I’d put it on the list anyway. This cover doesn’t scream THIS IS GOING TO BE AN EPIC BOOK. It looks interesting enough, but if I were to see this cover in the library or at a bookstore, I don’t think I’d pick it up. In reality, it’s a super fun book about a bunch of teens going across space trying to save the universe (with a morally ambiguous artificial intelligence).

Jackaby by William Ritter

This cover makes it seem like there’s going to be romance in this story. There’s a little bit, but it’s not between the two characters depicted on the cover. Plus, it doesn’t show the fantasy element in this book. Chicago Tribune says that Jackaby is “Sherlock Holmes crossed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and I couldn’t agree more with that statement.

The Iron Butterfly by Chanda Hahn

I get some fluffy, historical vibes from this cover, when in fact, the story is full fantasy and a little dark. The title is referencing the torture device that the main character Thalia was subject to in the hands of an evil cult before the start of the story. Yeah, this book is not all cutesy like the cover is trying to lead you to believe. Granted, it isn’t super heavy either, but it still has some dark elements in it.

The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

Again, I know this is a fairly popular book, but I thought it deserved a place on this list anyways. This cover makes it look like your average early 2000’s fantasy book, but Mistborn is so much more than that. If there is a series that lives rent-free in my brain, it is this one. The world, characters, and plot is so well thought-out that you’d be remiss if you don’t add this to your TBR.

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera

This book looks like it’s going to be all cute and fun. No, it’s not. Do not go into this book thinking it’s going to be happy and wholesome. This book will make you cry. Trust me.

any Jennifer L. Armentrout book

As much as I like JLA’s books, I think the covers are usually a little cheesy. The pictures above are the first books of some of her YA series with… questionable covers. Even if they’re a bit cheesy and/or vague, I think the stories themselves are all fantastic. If you like YA fantasy romance with badass females and book boyfriends, JLA is the author for you. Just a warning though: there isn’t a lot of representation/diversity is these series.

Hey! Congrats on making it down this far. Thanks for sticking around until the end. Also, I’m super sorry for click-baiting you.

What are some books with misleading covers that should be on this list?
Do you judge a book by its cover before picking it up? (I definitely do)
What do you look for in a book cover?

Stay awkward and amazing!
