The Anti-TBR Tag

We know what a TBR is (to be read). A lot of bookworms have TBRs long enough to last a lifetime. But one thing I’ve never heard of in all my years as an online bookworm is an anti-TBR. When I saw this tag (originally created by Nicole @ Nicole & Her Books on YouTube), I was intrigued.

Basically, the questions revolve around books/authors that you wouldn’t put in your TBR (hence the name). I’ve seen other people’s answers to these questions, and some of them are s p i c y.

(Hopefully I won’t get cancelled by the end of this.)

1. A popular book EVERYONE loves that you have no interest in reading?

This might be a cop-out answer, but I don’t plan on ever reading Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The premise doesn’t interest me, and I was too young when it became massively popular.

2. A classic book (or author) you don’t have an interest in reading?

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I’m not a big classics reader, but hearing my sister complain about it so much has made me very hesitant to pick it up.

3. An author whose books you have no interest in reading?

I’m not sure… probably celebrity memoirs? I don’t know (or care) about a lot of celebrities. I guess the one thing that will stop me from reading an author’s books is if that author is a really shitty person. I can’t, in good conscious, support that.

4. An author you have read a couple of books from & have decided their books are not for you?

This might be my most unpopular opinion in this whole post: Marie Lu. Before y’all cancel me, let me explain. I think she’s a fantastic writer, and I enjoyed some of her books in the past. One thing I’ve noticed lately is that her books don’t do it for me anymore. They’re okay, but that’s about it. They don’t make me feel much other than that was a pleasant story. I used to love her books, but now my thoughts on them are just shy of indifferent. This change of heart is because my reading tastes have shifted and not because I think she’s a terrible author or anything.

5. A genre you have no interest in OR a genre you tried to get into & couldn’t?

I desperately want to get into the contemporary genre, but they don’t hold my interest like fantasy books do. However, if you have any YA contemporary books recommendations, please let me know! I eventually want to read a couple to break my fantasy genre streak.

6. A book you have bought but will never read?

(I hope my friend doesn’t read this but) I unhauled The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. My friend had an extra copy that she gifted me, and I never ended up reading it. I unhauled a bunch of books before going to college, and that was one of the books that I let go.

7. A series you have no interest in reading OR a series you started & have DNFed?

A recent series that I DNF-ed (did not finish) was The Sweet Trilogy by Wendy Higgins. I read the first book (Sweet Evil) this year, and while I enjoyed it, I didn’t like it enough to commit to the whole series. Even though it had all the elements I like in YA fantasy (romance, magic, book boyfriend material, badass female lead, etc.), it didn’t hold my interest.

8. A new release you have no interest in reading?

This isn’t a new release anymore, but I had no interest in reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins when it was published. I liked The Hunger Games series, but my love for it has died down a lot with the hype. If this book was the backstory of one of the important side characters, I *might* have been tempted to pick it up. I couldn’t care less about President Snow, so I don’t see myself reading this at all.
