Skyward by Brandon Sanderson | book review

This review is spoiler-free!

“It has always seemed to me… that a coward is a person who cares more about what people say than about what is right. Bravery isn’t about what people call you, Spensa. It’s about who you know yourself to be.”

Synopsis

Spensa’s world has been under attack for hundreds of years. An alien race called the Krell leads onslaught after onslaught from the sky in a never-ending campaign to destroy humankind. Humanity’s only defense is to take to their ships and combat the enemy. Pilots are the heroes of what’s left of the human race.

Becoming a pilot has always been Spensa’s dream. Since she was a little girl, she has imagined soaring above Earth and proving her bravery. But her fate is intertwined with her father’s–a pilot himself who was killed years ago when he abruptly deserted his team, leaving Spensa’s chances of attending flight school at slim to none.

No one will let Spensa forget what her father did, but she is determined to fly. And the Krell just made that a possibility. They’ve doubled their fleet, which will make Spensa’s world twice as deadly… but just might take her skyward.

July felt both very long and very short at the same time. I don’t know how to explain it. It feels like it’s been July for forever, but at the same time I feel like this month has gone by so quickly.

Anyway! Confusing feelings aside, it’s time for the July wrap up!

The Crying Book Tag

나의 작은, 뒷동산에 올라

Any sympathetic criers out there? If so, I’m right there with you. It doesn’t take much to get me to cry, and that includes reading about people crying. Lauren over at Narrative Paradise created a tag talking about all the books that made her shed a tear (internally or externally), and I thought I’d join the party.

The Rules:

Synopsis

Hades and Persephone’s love-struck misadventures.

The classic tale of Greek mythology, but 100% more awkwardly relatable. Hades is the officious, antisocial ruler of the Underworld; Persephone, daughter of Demeter, is an earth goddess of growth and renewal – they’ve been crushing on each other for the past two centuries. But when a festival (and a little liquid courage) present an opportunity to put an end to their olympian will-they-won’t-they, a meddlesome pantheon and several titanic misassumptions threaten to give every god in the sky the wrong impression… and leave their romance dead before it can bloom.
